Occupy the Democracy

In solidarity with Hong Kong’s fight for democracy, this work projects an image from the 2014 Umbrella Revolution onto a Taipei voting venue during Taiwan’s mayoral election. It reflects the shared resistance of Hong Kong and Taiwan against the encroachment of authoritarian power from the People's Republic of China.

This work draws a symbolic connection between the democratic struggles of Hong Kong and Taiwan. While both regions are share a deep resistance to the totalitarian control of the People's Republic of China. After 1997, Hong Kong officially returned to Chinese rule, and the 2014 Umbrella Revolution emerged as a rare and powerful moment when Hongkongers collectively voiced their anger, fear, and desire for genuine democratic elections.

In response to the PRC’s ongoing efforts to undermine Taiwan’s democracy, Tzu Tung recorded the Umbrella Revolution and projected that image onto a voting site in Taipei during the city’s mayoral election. By overlaying a protest image onto an active democratic process, the work creates a visual confrontation between hope and suppression, between memory and immediacy. It is an act of solidarity, warning, and reflection—one that collapses distance between two places bound by parallel struggles.
